Meet Recap - State
After a long and distinguished cross country career for Finneytown, Brad Besserman wrapped up his CC career with his run at the State CC meet on Nov. 7, 2009.  He placed 64th out of 146 finishers in a time of 17:33.18.  Congratulations Brad!!!

Meet Recap - Regional
Brad and Alex competed in the Regional meet at Troy Memorial Stadium on Saturday, October 31.  For the first time in his CC career, Brad qualified to the State meet, finishing in 12 th place in a time of 16:55.07!  Alex also had a great race, finishing with a new Personal Record of 17:40.87 in 29th place.   There were 133 finishers in the race.  Brad and Alex both finished ahead of all other CHL finishers in the Division 2 race - a very impressive accomplishment!

Brad will now advance to the State Championship race on Saturday, Nov. 7 at 2:05pm.

Meet Recap - District Oct 24, 2009 at Voice of America Park
Congratulations to Brad Besserman (2nd place) and Alex Hughes (5th place) for qualifying to the Regional meet next Saturday!!!  This is the 3rd consecutive year that Brad has qualified for the Regional meet.  Alex's finish was also impressive - 5th place is the top place for a freshman in this district since results had grade levels (2003).  Also, for the first time in at least 15 years, Finneytown had a freshman qualify to regionals.  And all of this happened in absolutely horrible race conditions - temperature was in the upper 40s, with strong winds, and a very, very muddy and sloppy race course!

Kyle also had a great race - he was the only Finneytown runner to set a new Personal Record during the race.  Considering the race conditions, that was a pretty impressive feat!  Special recognition also needs to go out to the other HS runners - TJ, James, and Nylia.  The team was missing quite a few team members due to a marching band conflict, a soccer game, and illness.  Congratulations to the whole team on a great season!

Brad and Alex have at least one more week to go...  stay tuned.

Meet Recap - MS All City at Colerain High School
The last race for the Middle School runners this year was on Monday, October 19 at Colerain High School for the Middle School All-City Meet.

It was a fun race, with a lot of schools attending.  The races were organized a little differently than the meets we've been at so far this year.  Races were split by grade level, with Div 1, 2, and 3 all in the same race.  The results were then split after the race into Large School and Small School divisions.  It was great seeing all of our runners out cheering each other on and was a great way to end the season.  You've all worked very hard since we started in August and your results show it!  Congratulations!

Meet Recap - Cincinnati Hills League Championship 10/17/09
The CHL Championship meet was a great meet for the Finneytown Cross Country team!  Jaylah Howell won the MS Girls race in leading the girls team to a 2nd place finish.  Michael Hall also had a strong run for the MS Boys, finishing in 2nd place overall.  Brad Besserman won the HS Boys race for the second year in a row in a time of 17:03.  The HS Boys team finished 4th overall.

Stay tuned for more race information...

Meet Recap - Centerville Stampede, 10/10/09
Wow!  What a sloppy mess!  With all the rain over the past week, the course was very wet, muddy, and sloppy.  As a result, what we had expected to be a fast course, turned out to be on the slow side.

Devontay was the only runner to set a new personal record, taking 12 seconds off of his previous season best.  Nylia and Conner both were within 1 second of their best time!

Brad was the top finisher for Finneytown, taking 3rd place out of 164 runners in the HS Div 2/3 race.  Michael was the top finisher for the MS runners, finishing 5th out of 190 runners.

Meet Recap - St. Xavier Invitational 10/3/09
It was a beautiful day for a cross country meet - mid 50s and sunny for most of the time we were there.  The Middle School runners were first up and 10 of 11 runners set new personal records!  Chris Calvert had the biggest improvement, taking 2 minutes and 40 seconds off of his previous best time!  Jacob, Darius, Jaylah, and Corrine all improved their time by over a minute!

For the High School, 4 of our 10 finishers set new personal records, with Nylia showing the biggest improvement at 49 seconds.  Brad was the top finisher for Finneytown, finishing 5th out of 141 runners and claiming a spot on the awards podium.

We need to give a special thanks to Elizabeth and Dave Hasler for providing the food for the team.  When we arrived at the meet, they already had our camp set up with a tarp on the ground, blankets, chairs, and food on the table!  The Bouman's and Leimbach's also provided food for the team.

Help with food!
The team needs some help providing light snacks for our runners during meets on Saturdays.  Bagels, bananas, muffins, granola bars all work well.

If you can help with this, please send an email to Assistant Coach Mark Besserman at bessermanm@gmail.com.

Meet Recap - Milford Invitational 9/19/09
The meet was held at Miami Meadows Park in Milford.  With the course being described as very flat and fast, it was no surprise that 12 of our 20 runners set new personal records!  Julian, Kyle, Megan, and Chris deserve special recognition for taking more than one minute from their previous best times.  Way to go!

More to come...

Meet Recap - Mason Invitational 9/12/09
What a beautiful day for a CC race - a cool morning followed by a sunny and 70s afternoon!  This was a true cross country course, especially for the HS runners, with a creek crossing, hay bale jumping, and a run through the woods.

Generally times were a little slower for the HS runners than the times from Lebanon.  Even so, Devontay improved his time by over 2 minutes compared to the last race he ran two weeks ago at the Plasman Invitational in Fairfield.  It was also great having Kennedy Ndamba and Jonas Carlsson at this meet.  It's tough for them to do both soccer and CC, but we hope to see them at a couple more CC meets this year.

The times for the MS runners were amazingly fast until we realized the course was 3K (1.86 miles) instead of the full 2 mile course.  Chris Calvert had the biggest drop in time of any of the MS runners.  The next race at Milford is expected to be flat and fast, so it will be exciting to see how all of the runners have improved when the MS gets back to a 2 mile course.

Great job to all the runners and keep up the hard work at practice this week!

Full stats are available on the Schedule/Results page.

The first meet of the season was Saturday, August 29 (High School only).  The meet was at Harbin Park in Fairfield.  We had some great weather for a very competitive first meet of the season, which included many Div. 1 teams.

Nylia Howell               26:56
Jenny Besserman    27:57

It was a good first race of the season for all runners, with the times from this meet now becoming the benchmark for improvement in later meets.  Full results can be found at ghgtiming.com

Policy for Riding the Bus to Meets
School policy requires runners to ride to and from meets on the team bus.  Runners are required to ride home on the bus unless a written permission is approved by Athletic Director Grosser before the day of the meet.

Congratulations to the New CC Coaches!
Finneytown MS/HS is pleased to announce the hiring of two new coaches for the 2009 Cross Country season.  Rich Jones, Student Ministry Director at Northminster Presbyterian Church, will be the Head Coach.  Pat Hasler, a recent Finneytown graduate and current UC student, will be the Assistant Coach.  Both Rich and Pat are long time runners with a long connection to the Finneytown community.  They are excited about the new season and are looking forward to building on the success that Don Monich brought to the program as coach last season.  Also helping out this year as a volunteer coach will be Mark Besserman, father of Brad (senior) and Jenny (sophomore).

Highlights from the 2008 Season
The stories below this banner highlight some of the successes from last season.  We're looking for even better results this year!

Mr. Monich has the 2008 Season Highlights DVD produced by Mr. Leimbach.  If you would like a copy of this DVD, please contact Mr. Monich at dmonich@finneytown.org

Thank You from Coach Monich
A big thanks to all the parents, runners, family, and friends who made this 2008 cross country season such a success for our student/athletes.  We had top CHL boy runners at the HS and MS level, ran full boys and girls teams at the HS and MS levels (except for HS girls), finished a MS Girls team 2nd place at Lebanon, and have many talented young runners.

The Besserman family filled roles as coach, manager, coordinator, and provided the team with our top HS boy and girl runners, while Jeff Leimbach's talent and effort as photographer will make the season come alive again for years to come.  The Friday dinners were important for building team spirit, and the sponsors included families of Brad & Jenny, Davia, Morgan, TJ, Shyla, Oscar, Devin, and Kyle.

As a first year coach, I can improve in many areas; please let me know where you'd like to see some improvements!

HS Season Ends in the Cold at Troy Regional
Finneytown's Regional Tournament runner Brad Besserman ran a hard race this Saturday, Oct 25th at the Troy Div II Region 8 Meet, but failed to qualify for state competition next weekend in Columbus.

Brad's target time and goal of State competition were well defined:  Run a personal best time under 17:00 and finish in the top sixteen at Troy.  Unfortunately, tough competition and cold, windy weather stood in the way.  Brad finished 48th out of 130 runners with a time of 17:45.  All other CHL runners missed the 16:57 sixteenth-place cut-off time.

Although disappointed with these results, Brad can be proud to have overcome a difficult injury to win the CHL Championship race, earn CHL Runner of the Year award,  and run a CHL 4th-best time of 17:13.  Plenty of opportunities and achievements await Brad next year, including senior leadership of a young, improving team.
